City of Peths

Pune City is unique for its Peths,which is a name for an area. Most of the Peths are named after the days of the week, and some Peths are named after their founders.

Kasba Peth 

Oldest Peth of Pune which was established in 14th Century. Today this is a residential area. Kasba Ganapati temple, Lal Mahal, Brass and Copper utensils manufacturers, Kumbhar waada are some of the main places over here.

Somwar Peth

Established in about 16th century and earlier known as Shahapura. Today this is a residential area.

Mangalwar Peth

Established in 1662 by Shaista Khan was earlier known as Shaistapuri.
Today it is famous for Transport business. Trishund Ganapani Temple, Kamla Nehru Hospital are located over here.

Budhwar Peth

Established by Aurangzeb in 1660 and it was known as Mohyabad. Today it is a business area known for the electrical goods market, Jogeshwari temple, Ganapati Temple, Vishrambaug wada etc.

Guruwar Peth

Established in 1730 by Jivajipant Khasgiwale and was earlier known as Vital Peth, because of the Vital temple in this area. The Parasnath –Jain Temple is also famous over here.

Shukurwar Peth 

Established in 1734 during the period of Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao by Jivajipant Khasgiwale. It was earlier known as Visapur. Today it is famous for Mandai (vegetable market), Tulsi Baugh, Kelkar Museum,Ram Mandir etc.

Shaniwar Peth

Established by Thorale Bajirao in the late 17th century.Shaniwarwada,Amruteshwar Temple, Hutatma Smarak are famous places over here.

Raviwar Path

Malkampura was its original name. It is famous for Gold and Jewellery shops, Plastic Product Market, Wholesale textile market, Laxminarayan Temple, Someshwar Temple, Ram Mandir, Jumma Masjid etc.

Sadashiv Peth

Establised in 1760 in the memory of Sadashiv Rao Bhau, an uncle of Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao It was largely a military set up and today developed as a residential area of Brahmin families. Nehru Stadium, Tilak Smarak Mandir, Maratha Chamber of Commerce, Bharat Natya Mandir, Vishrambag Vada, Saras Baug, Bhikardas Maruti,Talayatalya Ganapati are the main attraction of this place.

Nana Peth 

Set up by Nana Phadnavis in 1761 and was known as Nihal Peth. Wholesale grain market, large automotive spare part market, Nivdungya Vithoba Temple are famous over here.

Ganesh Peth

Establised by Peshwa Sawai Madhav Rao in 1755. and named after Lord Ganesh. It has a big milk market and tamasha theatre. Gurudwara, Dulya Maruti temple, Shri Gurusingh Sabaha, Dagdinagoba are famous in this Peth.

Bhavani Peth

Named after the Goddess Bhavani whose temple is in this area was set up in 1763. This peth is famous for large timber, hardware and steel market.

Ghorpadi Peth

Set up by Raje Bhosle Ghorpade as a cavalry unit during the times of Peshwa Sawai Madhav Rao. Today this is a residential area.

Narayan Peth

Established by Narayan Rao Peshwa in 1773. Big stationery, printing and paper market, Kesari Newspaper office, Kesari wada etc. are famous over here.

Gunj Peth

Earlier known as Muzaffarjang, was established during the reign of Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa. Got its name because of the large salt mounds. It was a commercial center predominated by traders, weavers, etc.

Navi Peth

The latest of the Peth was set up the Panshet floods in 1961. Poona hospital, Vaikunth (Crematoria) are famous this Peth.

Rasta Peth

Established by in 1776 and named after its founder Shrimant Anandrao Laxman Raste and was earlier known as Shivpuri. Today it is a residential area mainly with South Indian families.
